New Poll Shows Americans Continue to Overwhelmingly Support Trade Agreements

New Trade Agreements Will Spur U.S. Exports, Job Creation and Manufacturing Growth

Washington, D.C., March 26, 2015 Likely general election voters across the political spectrum remain supportive of trade agreements with additional countries that open overseas markets for goods manufactured in the United States and continue to overwhelmingly believe Congress and the President should work together to seek new trade deals, according to new polling data.

“This poll is further evidence that the American people strongly support trade agreements to spur U.S. exports and grow manufacturing,” said National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Vice President of International Economic Affairs Linda Dempsey. “However, to conclude high-standard trade deals that deliver on those goals, Congress must pass Trade Promotion Authority.”

The poll, commissioned by the NAM and released today by national survey firm McLaughlin & Associates, also shows a majority of likely voters across America are more likely to back candidates who support trade agreements. According to the March 2015 poll of 1,000 likely voters:

  • 82 percent believe that the President and Congress should work together to put in place new trade agreements;

  • 73 percent support the United States seeking more trade agreements with additional countries; and

  • 59 percent would be more likely to vote for a candidate for Congress who supports free trade agreements.

To conclude and implement new trade agreements that enable America’s more than 265,000 manufacturers and their more than 12 million employees to better reach the 95 percent of the world’s consumers who live outside the United States, the NAM is urging Congress to move expeditiously to pass Trade Promotion Authority.
